Our Visions Change Our World

sun-rise-mountain_21191815This is a story about a young man who grew up in a verdant valley surrounded by foothills and a beautiful mountain to the east.  Every morning he would awaken before the sunrise so that he could view the unique majesty of the various images that the sun’s rays would create as they shot past the magnificent peak. He was amazed by the multitudes of colors and the contrasts of the rays depending on the amount of clouds or the seasons of the year.

One day he went to his father to tell him he was leaving the village in search of his personal “greatness”.  His father gave him a hug and whispered in his ear, “Where will your greatness be found?”  The son, with one arm still draped over his father’s shoulder, turned them to face the distant mountain rising high to the heavens; “There Father, the mountain calls to me each morning. I will surely find my greatness at the peak.”  Hugging once more, the father wished his man-son a safe journey in his search for greatness.

It took the young man three long months to reach the exact destination of his quest.  Upon arrival the first thing he noticed was that the area looked much different than what it did from the village on the valley floor. The trees were not as lush or impressive as they appeared from the distance of his old home.  The ground was not soft dirt; instead the ground was solid rock, jagged and unforgiving.  Still he was jubilant for reaching the destination of his greatness. Thinking out loud, “I will make a quick shelter facing the east so that each morning I can see and feel the sun’s powerful rays as they shoot past me toward the valley of my father.”

The first morning the young man was in awe.  Eager to experience the greatness of his new home, he woke an hour before the sun did.  As he sat facing the east, he was brought to tears by the beauty of what he saw.  Remaining completely still, he sat motionless, watching the sun until it was three hand above the horizon.  Lying back on his makeshift bedding he screamed to the sun, “Why did you take the rays from this place?”  From his new perspective the rays did not streak past him or the peak as they had done each morning from his vantage point in the village.  Shaken but not defeated he went about his day exploring his new home.  “Tomorrow the rays and the majesty of my greatness will return.”

sunrise_21018536For over a month he observed the sun’s rising and its setting, never experiencing the bursting encounter he imagined from the years of observation from below. However, each morning and evening brought beauty beyond compare. To the east, the greatness and the power of the sun’s rays seemed to spring upward from a place so distant it was hard to detect the location of the event. To the west in the evening the gentle splashes of vivid colors leapt across the entire sky saturating the distant clouds and the waters of the glassy sea just on the other side of the hills that separated the village from the seashore. As he sat on the ledge watching the sun sink out of sight, the fires of his father’s village would slowly emerge from the deepening darkness.  It was like the sun’s power, exhausted by the long day, melted into the ocean and the clouds clung to the greatness as they hung over his father’s village.

A year to the day from his departure, the young man reappeared in the doorway of his father’s house. His father looked up and gazed into the eyes of a man; almost not recognizing the man who the son had become. They stepped together to share a warm embrace and the father whispered, “I see you found your greatness on the mountain.” With tears sliding down his cheek, the young man whispered, “No Father, I found that my greatness was grounded in you, and has always been within me.  What I thought to be my greatness was not mine to possess but was mine to admire; guiding us to our own internal greatness. We must absorb that special power, reflecting that greatness to one another.  It was never mine to keep but instead to use as personal motivation, setting my perspectives, and to guide me to the locations that I am needed to be.”

“I am proud of you my son.  You found your greatness and through your understanding it will continue to grow throughout your life. For our Visions change our Motivations, which in turn changes our Perspectives, which drives us to change our Locations, which once more changes our Visions, which changes our motivations…this is the cycle of the vision of life my son.”

Keep your eyes focused on the greatness that you envision and your heart open to positive change.
